Adult Correctional Services
Adult Correctional Services (ACS) assists offenders with behavioral health or co-occurring disorders to access educational and discharge planning services while in the custody of the Virginia Beach Sheriff's Office.
ACS increases treatment compliance both in the jail and in the community, provides intensive re-entry services, reduces recidivism, and fosters a commitment to a drug-free, violence free, crime free lifestyle; reducing the need for inpatient psychiatric hospitalization, all while allowing individuals to live in the community with the highest degree of independence.

Our Services
- Specialized court with the purpose of assisting individuals with specific needs and problems that were not or could not be adequately addressed in traditional courts
- Fosters a recuperation from the damage of addiction
- Reduces recidivism among Drug Court participants
- Increases independence and social accountability
- Engages the family and community in the recovery process through education and awareness of alcohol/drug abuse or dependence
- Advocacy for seriously mentally ill inmates
- Intensive discharge planning
- Referrals to other services as needed
- Restoration to competency for seriously mentally ill inmates
- Provided to inmates at Virginia Beach Correctional Center
- Voluntary participation
- 16-week curriculum-based education modules for inmates with substance use/co-occurring disorders
- Referrals & community resources for continuity of care after release from Virginia Beach Correctional Center
- Re-entry group for inmates who are serving a sentence of 6 months or less. This group focuses on reintegration into the community by working on life skills, vocational abilities, money management, and housing opportunities.
- Links, coordinates and monitors services for individuals who have been found Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity
- Assists adult clients to live independently in the community
- Minimizes hospitalization/institutionalization
- Provides quality services to meet the needs of the community and Court
